Royal City Uke Fest 2019

The Royal City Uke Fest (RCUF) in Guelph is a weekend of all things ukulele - two fun-filled days of concerts, workshops, play-alongs, and other activities. If you don’t know already, I am a big fan of the ukulele. Music has always been a part of my life since I was young, but as an adult I was slowly losing interest in making music and was feeling stuck - until I discovered the ukulele. Such a small and underestimated instrument has somehow relaunched my journey in music, and has also given me a whole new community of like-minded musicians to share and learn with. I’ve attended the RCUF since its inception in 2017, and every year has been great. However, this time around was something special. The festival director Cynthia Kinnunen asked if I could design an image for this year’s festival. What an honour!

The main idea was to create an image of the ukulele combined with watercolour. I was also given the festival logo colour that I needed to match.

I started with line drawings of different shapes and styles of ukuleles.

I then created random washes of watercolour on paper.

I put everything through the scanner and using Photoshop, I played around with different compositions. This is what I came up with:

The image ended up in the festival program, and on merchandise such as pins and tshirts.

What a great opportunity to contribute to something I love - and thanks to Cynthia for thinking of me and for supporting local artists.
