Pandemic Log: Hoopla 2020 - Necessary Arts, Guelph
2020 - need I say more?
However, times of distress and uncertainty can really bring people together - art centres, collectives, and other groups took to social media to keep up the spirits of the arts community through different events - one example is Necessary Arts. Their annual Hoopla show, which features artwork from various artists done on the same blank wooden circular canvas, would’ve been cancelled due to COVID, but studio owner and director Chanel Desroches took it upon herself to make it happen anyways. Following public health guidelines, the pieces would have to be viewed from outside, through the glass wall of the studio, but they would also be available for viewing online. There would be plenty of promotion on social media, and minus the cost of the wooden panel, artists would keep full profit of the sales, how generous!
For my submission, I based it off one of my drawings I did for an October challenge last year
I took the concept of taking a bath in a warm hot cocoa, and tried it with another hot liquid - ramen broth. Here was my final piece:
I also posted a quick process video loop on Youtube:
While coming up with a name for my piece, I was playing with the idea of “Noodle Spa”, so I did a quick google search just to make sure there weren’t any strange or negative associations that already existed with the words, and guess what! I discovered that there are in fact spas in Japan where you can submerge yourself in pools of ramen broth! Mind. Blown.
